Credit for Prior/Experiential Learning

The terms Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), and Alternative Credit refer to ways in which you can receive credit for things that you have learned outside of the traditional college classroom. All of these will be referred to as CPL.

CPL reduces time to completion and saves you money for what you have already learned! CPL credits can be given for any college-level learning that a student has mastered outside of a traditional classroom setting. You may earn credit through any one or a combination of the following:

Advanced Placement® (AP®)
College Level Examination Program (CLEP®)
IVCC Proficiency exams
International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit
DSST Military Credit
Military Training
Illinois High School Diploma (HSE/GED) Test results
State Seal of Biliteracy

  • Note that acceptance of credit for prior learning varies among transfer institutions.
  • Credit for prior learning experiences does not count toward residency requirement for a degree or certificate at IVCC except for credits by proficiency examination. After meeting the residency requirement, students may be awarded credit for up to a maximum of 75% of the credits for a degree and/or certificate.
  • A non-refundable fee of $20/credit hour is due at the time the student makes application or after completing residency to receive credit for prior learning. Students must show proof of payment when turning in a portfolio for review or before taking a proficiency exam.

According to The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), students earning CPL (excluding credit received for military) on average are 30% more likely to complete their college credential.
