Learning Resources Division

The Center for Accessibility & Neurodiversity is a unit under the Learning Resources Division, which also houses several other student resource locations:

  • Academic Support Center
  • Jacobs Library
  • Student Help Desk
  • Tutoring & Writing Center

Due to the nature of our services, we also work closely with the IVCC Assessment Center where students can take placement tests, state exams, Pearson Vue testing, Scantron and CLEP testing, as well as testing for employment and safety through the IVCC Business Training office. Visit the Assessment Center website for more details about their services.

ADA and IVCC: What You Need To Know

Disability Law

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed July 26, 1990 as Public Law 101-336 and became effective on January 26, 1992.  The ADA is landmark federal legislation that provides civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities.

IVCC is committed to responding to the needs of students with disabilities as outlined in the REHABILITATION ACT OF 1973 and the AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT OF 1990, AS AMENDED. Here is an OVERVIEW of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Further information can be found in the Guide to Disability Rights Laws

Information to Get You Started

Individuals with disabilities and/or medical/mental health conditions who attend or plan to attend IVCC may need reasonable accommodations, modifications, and/or auxiliary aids in order to have equal access to programs and services offered. The laws that require post-secondary institutions to provide services to otherwise qualified students include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. To receive accommodations, a student must notify the Center for Accessibility and Neurodiversity to initiate the process and to determine eligibility for accommodations.

The ADA defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities such as walking, standing, seeing, speaking, hearing, sitting, breathing, reading, learning, thinking, performing manual tasks such as taking care of oneself. Those individuals who have a record of such impairment, or are regarded as having such an impairment are included in the definition as well. For more in-depth information regarding the definition of disability, please reference the following link: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/42/12102.

For specific information on the types of documentation by disability category, please visit the Documentation & Forms page.
