June 2012 Board Report

Illinois Valley Community College’s board Tuesday approved 3 percent salary increases for support staff and 2.5 percent increases for administrators excluding the president.

Part-time faculty will also receive an average 3.17 percent increase this fall following trustee approval of a $20 per credit hour hike. In a separate action, Vice President for Business Services and Finance Cheryl Roelfsema and Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness Lori Scroggs received 2.5 percent increases.

Both vice presidents will receive additional compensation due to increased responsibilities resulting from the resignation of Vice President for Learning and Student Development Rick Pearce. Last month, Scroggs was named Pearce’s interim replacement.

President Jerry Corcoran will receive a raise of slightly less than 3 percent.

In other business, President Jerry Corcoran updated trustees on progress on the Peter Miller Community Technology Center. Two-thirds of the steel frame and metal decking are in place, underground plumbing is expected to be completed by the end of the week and underground electrical work continues, Corcoran said.

Concrete second floor decking and exterior metal framing will begin June 25. Precast concrete walls will go up in early August, Corcoran said, adding, “As Cheryl (Roelfsema) said this afternoon after wrapping up a weekly meeting with all of the key players on the project, ‘This is really going to be special building.’”

Massage therapy will be moving from Building 11 to the renovated area in Building G (gymnasium) in early July, the roof of Building F will be replaced within a month and the geothermal horizontal loop will be completed in six weeks.

In other action, the board approved:

  • A $48,000 “port fee” to Ellucian (formerly Datatel) to allow migration of the Colleague administrative system to a Windows/SQL server environment.
  • Participating in a 28-college cooperative agreement that includes all ICCB and IBHE-approved programs of study leading to an AAS degree or certificate in career and technical education.
  • A resolution requiring the prevailing wage is paid to all laborers, workers and mechanics employed by or on behalf of the college on a public works project.
  • Authorization allowing the administration to continue making standard operating expenditures between July 1, the beginning of the fiscal year, and adoption of the 2013 budget.
  • Recommitting to renovation of Jacobs Library and expansion of the Fitness Center, an $8.4 million project on the state’s capital development waiting list. If approved, IVCC’s 25 percent match would be just over $2.1 million.
  • Glenna Jones, director of human resources, as IVCC’s new ethics officer. As such, Jones will coordinate training activities and be a resource for supervisors and staff in regard to ethical decision-making.
  • A modification of the contract with the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) Local 176 to continue providing an AAS degree program in electrical construction for workers completing the electrician’s apprenticeship program.
  • Reducing full-time trainer specialist/site facilitator Tony Mertes to part-time due to decreased enrollment in truck driver training.
  • Bids totaling $64,890 from Universal Asphalt & Excavating, Inc., of La Salle, for asphalt and pavement repair, sealing, marking and pothole patching in lots 1 through 6.

Trustees learned:

  • IVCC was one of only five Illinois community colleges awarded a share of the College and University Asbestos Property Damage Settlement Fund. IVCC received $113,134 in the class-action suit.
  • Exelon’s LaSalle Station recently donated four reclaiming units worth $12,000 and one flow systems trainer worth $20,000 to IVCC’s HVAC, industrial maintenance and automotive programs. The donation is a result of a three-year partnership between IVCC’s Business Training Center and Exelon.
  • Live webcast of the May nurses pinning, commencement and GED graduation allowed family members around the world to view the achievements of their loved ones, Corcoran said.
  • Maintenance worker Paul Hartwig has been hired and three employees have resigned: assistant volleyball coach Carolyn Bryant, Ottawa Center information specialist Caitlin Downey and part-time academic support technologist Elizabeth Pommier.
  • There were 562 spring graduates earning a total of 701 degrees and certificates compared to 646 graduates earning 724 degrees and certificates in spring 2011.
