Scheri IVAC award
Illinois Valley Community College’s Director of Continuing Education and Business Services, Jennifer Scheri, is one of 20 Community Cornerstone recipients recognized by the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce for their impact and contributions to the region.
The recognition “is an expression of gratitude and a heartfelt tribute to those individuals who have dedicated themselves to making our communities stronger, kinder, and more vibrant,” IVAC’s call for nominations stated last summer. “(They) have laid a strong foundation for our community's continued growth … whether they have spearheaded local initiatives, developed successful businesses, acted as a guiding light for others, or volunteered countless hours.”
In her 30-year career with IVCC, Scheri worked with dislocated workers before moving to the Continuing Education and Business Services Division, where she spearheads the college’s outreach efforts to strengthen business and industry, train the local workforce, and provide community enrichment programs.
“I’m honored to be placed in this group of talented people who, each and every one in their own way, have left their mark on the community,” Scheri said. The inaugural class represents small business, finance, non-profits, retail, government, health care, media, law enforcement and education.
Scheri was nominated by colleague Jennifer Sowers, IVCC’s Business Training Specialist, who said Scheri was an obvious choice. “Her work is invaluable, and she deserves to be recognized for all she has done for the college and our community,” Sowers said. “Jennifer has dedicated her career to IVCC, and her work through the years has solidified many community partnerships that still hold strong.”
“I am so humbled that she would think to nominate me,” said Scheri, who credits her staff and co-workers for the division’s accomplishments. “Though I’m the recipient of this award, the impact on our community has been a group effort. and I'm thankful to be surrounded by such talented, hardworking, wonderful people.”
In addition to her role at IVCC, Scheri has been active on boards and as a volunteer. “You have to give back to your community. I try to contribute as much as I can to all the organizations I serve,” she said.
