September 2012 Board Report

Illinois Valley Community College President Jerry Corcoran gave trustees a construction update on the Peter Miller Community Technology Center at the monthly board meeting Tuesday.

Corcoran said mechanical piping is being laid out on the first floor, concrete partitions are being put into place and the metal framing started today.

On the second floor, HVAC duct work and mechanical piping and plumbing rough-in is underway and interior metal framing is in progress.

Other construction developments shared by Corcoran include:

  • The storm water detention pond excavation is nearing completion;
  • Plantings in the pond and geothermal field will start at the end of September;
  • Weather barrier installation will start next week;
  • Precast detailing and caulking is complete;

Roofing continues and window framing started last week.

“Contractor George Sollitt Construction Company (of Wood Dale) is doing a phenomenal job,” said Corcoran. 

Phase 2 asbestos abatement in Buildings 5 and 10 is complete and excavation for the maintenance facility will begin Thursday.

In other action, the board approved:

  • The purchase of 26 Dell computers for the Computer Aided Drafting Lab for $17,914. The purchase will be paid for through Perkins funds.
  • The purchase of 280 tons of rock salt from Cargill at $59.75 per ton for a total of $16,730 through the Illinois Department of Central Management Services consortia of community colleges.
  • The $25,104 bid of Midland Paper of Wheeling for multipurpose paper used in printers, copy and fax machines across campus.
  • A $109,375 Ellucian upgrade of the administrative software system from the AIX/Unidata platform to a Windows/SQL server. The migration will allow the college to use less expensive virtualized servers and will provide more effective reporting.
  • The purchase of $162,406 in hardware, software and services from American Digital to update the Colleague administrative system. In addition, the board approved the purchase of up to $15,000 in Microsoft and SQL server licensing from CDW-G and $31,855 in hardware from Dell for the expansion of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
  • The cash farm lease with Luke Holly of Granville for $366 per acre or $54,709 total on 149 acres of farmland.
  • Academic calendars summer 2013 through summer 2015.
  • Support for a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) for more than $1.59 million in workforce training equipment for the Peter Miller CTC. If approved, IVCC and EDA would each put up $796,000.
  • The resolution designating time, date and place for filing nominating petitions for the April 9 board election. Petitions for the two, six-year seats can be filed with board secretary Jeanne Hayden in Room C301 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday Dec. 17-21 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. 

The board learned:

  • Of the hiring of Steve Gillio as a second-shift custodian and the resignations of dental assisting instructor Pattie McGuire effective Dec. 18 and career development coordinator for IVCC’s Dislocated Workers Center at Sauk Valley Community College Sarah Partington effective Friday.
  • A total of 260 summer graduates received 289 degrees and certificates.
  • Full-time IVCC employees enrolled in Lincoln College-Normal’s Accelerated Bridge to Education (ABE) program at IVCC will receive a 20 percent reduction in tuition.
  • Although it had been announced the intramural program would be discontinued this year due to the limited number of students participating in previous years and the need to reduce athletic expenses, the Peru YMCA has contacted the administration regarding opportunities for partnerships in this area and the matter is being explored.
  • Geology instructor Mike Phillips will present “An expedition to the Capitol: Working with lawmakers to ensure legislation incorporates the geosciences perspective,” at the Geological Society of America’s annual conference Nov. 4-7 in Charlotte, N.C.
  • The IVCC Foundation will host a donor wall rededication 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The refurbished display is located in the hallway between the main lobby and the Counseling Center and across from the Hall of Presidents.  Following the ceremony, the Foundation will host its annual Scholarship Recognition Reception in the gymnasium. “In the 4-and-a-half years since being appointed president, I’ve really enjoyed attending Foundation events and watching special, lifelong relationships develop between our donors and the beneficiaries of their generosity,” said Corcoran.
  • A total of 30 positions – excluding part-time faculty – were filled at the college in fiscal 2012, Director of Human Resources Glenna Jones said in her report to the board.
